PromaxGames Sponsor Titles

ART DIRECTION, DESIGN, animation, compositing

Capacity is proud to be the design partner for the PromaxGames 2018 Summit, held in San Francisco. We had a blast working with all the Promax folks as the project itself took on a life of its own and became much more ambitious than we originally intended -- which was entirely self-imposed, and driven by the enthusiasm and creativity of the team -- as we took a wide open creative brief and infused it with some fun storytelling and conceptual technical goals… We built the opening titles primarily in Unreal Engine, which we felt was a fitting move for a gaming conference and also an inspiring challenge for the team. Even though it never had to exist in a playable format, we built the scenes to be functional and even acted some of them out in engine with a controller. It was so much fun to create a stylized interpretation of a game-inspired SF cityscape and be able to run around in it with our custom characters! The resulting title sequence, along with the supporting conference backdrops and promotional toolkits, are a labor of love which we are so excited to share with the community. We sincerely look forward to doing more work like this, and we’re excited to see what the future holds! Many thanks to our partners at PromaxGames for the opportunity to make cool stuff together and to Echolab for adding amazing sound design to our custom track!

This project is really close to the whole Capacity team. We put everything into this one.

We were asked by the wonderful folks at PromaxBDA to become a partner in their games summit. This included coming up with the logo design, style guide, and an opening animation for the event.

We knew we wanted to do something in a stylized version in San Francisco, since the event was hosted there, so the initial frames were simple silhouettes with the shapes flying through. Once the rest of the team was able to jump in on the project Ellerey came up with the idea of having the video go through different genres of video games. This gave us a base for what each scene/sequence would be.

Once we built out the city and had a structure for the edit we used are vast experience of playing games to add in ideas that felt like each genre. It was a really fun process.

Our concept artist Alex Kintner has a lot of experience in Unreal and was able to teach the whole team how to use the engine pretty quickly.  He also did the concept art for all the characters and built out the structure for the city.

This was the most fun I've ever had on a project. I feel super honored to have been a part of it.

Here's a process video we put together:

We put together some footage + screen captures of our process on this super fun project, which was built primarily in Unreal Engine for the PromaxGames Summit in San Francisco. It was a team effort for sure, and one of the most creatively inspiring things we’ve been a part of in recent memory. Check out the original video to see the final product!
